Socio-economic impacts

The submarine observatory aims at providing the authorities with reliable data to make the most informed decisions possible for crisis response. Given that Mayotte is threatened by volcanic and seismic activity in the short, mid and long-term, the societal stakes are therefore considerable. By improving our understanding of the hazardous lithospheric processes on land and at sea, the project will make it possible to propose new strategies to mitigate hazards, with a strong impact on the socio-economic development planning for Mayotte and for enhancing societal resilience. The advances achieved in Mayotte will impact research and socio-economic strategies for other insular areas exposed to volcanic, seismic and associated tsunami risks in the context of global climate and associated changes.
