2. Novel species described

The cultivation and isolation of novel strains from deep-sea extreme environments represented a significant part of our activity during the last 15 years. Among the thousands of strains isolated are worth to be mentioned: 1 new order (Nautiniales), 16 new genera and 50 novel species that were described, frequently in cooperation with other laboratories.

Chronologically, the list of new genera is as follows: Desulfurobacterium, Zobellia, Marinitoga, Caloranaerobacter, Caminicella, Caminibacter, Nautilia, Oceanothermus, Vulcanithermus, Tepidibacter, Thermodesulfatator, Petrimonas, Vulcanibacillus, Hellea, Eudoraea, Haliea.

A specific effort was dedicated to Thermococcales which resulted in the description of many novel species and the establishment of a Thermococcales culture collection of several hundreds of strains. Among them, T. barophilus is the only true piezo-hyperthermophilic archaea described up to now, and T. gammatolerans combines hyperthermophily and high resistance to ionizing radiation.

Among the various novel species described or co-described by the LM2E and the pre-exiting labs, some display an interest high enough, either due to their position in the tree of life or for their potential biotechnological applications, to have their genome completely sequenced or to undergo complete sequencing.
