Nouvelles espèces décrites

 La culture et l'isolement de nouvelles souches à partir d'échantillons collectés dans les milieux extrêmes océaniques a constitué une part importante de l'activité du LM2E et des laboratoires qui l'ont précédé au cours des 17 dernières années. Parmi les milliers de souches isolées, conservées en collection, il convient de souligner que cette activité s'est traduite par la description de 1 ordre nouveau (Nautiniales), 16 nouveaux genres et 57 nouvelles espèces. Ce travail a souvent été effectué en collaboration avec d'autres laboratoires.
 La liste de nouveaux genres décrits, soit en propre soit en coopération avec d'autres laboratoires, établie par ordre chronologique, est la suivante: Desulfurobacterium, Zobellia, Marinitoga, Caloranaerobacter, Caminicella, Caminibacter, Nautilia, Oceanothermus, Vulcanithermus, Tepidibacter, Thermodesulfatator, Petrimonas, Vulcanibacillus, Hellea, Eudoraea, Haliea.
 

Un effort particulier a été effectué sur l'ordre des Thermococcales, regroupant des archées hyperthermophiles hétérotrophes présentant un intérêt pour les applications biotechnologiques. Ceci s'est traduit par la constitution d'une collection de plusieurs centaines d'isolats et la description de plusieurs espèces. Parmi ces dernières, Thermococcus barophilus est la seule piezo-hyperthermophile connue à ce jour, et T. gammatolerans combine hyperthermophilie et résistance élevée aux rayonnements ionisants.

Parmi les espèces décrites ou co-décrites par le LM2E et les laboratoires pré-existant, plusieurs souches ont présenté, soit du fait de leur position dans l'arbre du vivant, de leur résistance à des conditions extrêmes ou de leur intérêt biotechnologique potentiel, suffisamment d'intérêt pour voir leur génome complètement séquencé. Le tableau suivant récapitule l'état d'avancement des travaux de séquençage de génomes.
