Site de Palavas

Palavas site provides experimental facilities with various rearing systems using either recirculated or flow though circuits with a high degree of environment control including photoperiod, water quality (e.g. thermoregulation spans from 13 to 28°C) and feeding management. Tanks range from 50 l (larvae) to 10 m3 (juvenile and adult stages) with continuous on site monitoring of physico-chemistry parameters, livestock biosecurization and on site 24/24 safekeeping. Furthermore, an exceptional broodstock of sea bass, established from the 90’s, is available for producing qualified offspring with different strains, generations, all female breeders, hydrids etc… They were widely used for different EU programmes covering several research areas for which the control of ploïdy and genetic background can be useful. These lines may be used to assess for example compounds effect on a large set of genetically identical individual or to evaluate the importance of individual variation in response to a molecule. Outflow water treatment is operational.

Exposures: Exposures can be performed at any life stage including reproductive ones. Exposures can be performed through several routes, but for the moment diet exposure is favoured. Food is provided by the platform but medium contamination should be performed by client. If the client has no ability to perform these contaminations, they may be performed with additional costs by associated laboratories/platforms. If specific medium has to be prepared; exposure will be performed in a sequential manner with first a small scale experiment to monitor medium behaviour in water and if applicable the absence of appetence modification between spiked and control media. The chemicals or pollutants and exposure procedures will be discussed on a case by case basis in order to ascertain staff, neighbour population and environment health security.

Exposures can be performed in a chronic manner (starting and ending at any time) or acute. In this latter case, fish may be breed afterward during a required period of time (e.g. embryo-larvae exposure and rearing until reproduction).

Phenotype analysis: As said above, service can be limited to exposure and samples dispatched or all or partial analysis can be performed in Palavas site. Analysis abilities include biometry, morpho-anatomy, gamete and spawn qualification, and biochemical markers markers such as hormone assay (ELISA) or enzymatic assay (spectrophotometry, chemiluminescence, fluorimetry). Finally service provided by both platforms can include monitoring of several individual behavioural traits at any stage between larvae and adults.
