Technical and scientific cooperation between Research Center Ocean Margins (RCOM) in Bremen and Ifremer on the fluid system dynamics of the African continental margin involved using the MEBO core sampler on RV Pourquoi pas? in October 2011. Feasibility studies were conducted in 2007 and 2008, relating mainly to the mechanical strength of the ship’s rear gantry. In 2011, the location design details for this heavy-duty equipment on board the Pourquoi pas? were completed. The system was installed on board the vessel between October 12 and 17 in Brest. A day of sea trials was conducted to validate the deployment and train the crew in manoeuvring this new apparatus. The Guinéco-MEBO mission took place in November 2011.
