The Acoustics and Seismic department (AS)

Head : Yves LE GALL

The Acoustic unit is responsable for R&D in the field of underwater acoustics, mainly for cartography, characterisation of sedimentary layers, halieutics and physical oceanography.

Depending on Ifremer requirements for innovative sonar  systems, the laboratory  designs, specifies, develops and evaluates demonstrators or prototypes, from transducers to complete systems.

It develops tools and methods to control the quality of data acquired by sonar  systems, as well as new methods for signal and data processing.

Alongside its R&D activity, the AS laboratory participates in technological development and expertise research projects requiring skills in acoustics and seismics. This support activity concerns all the technological departments of Ifremer and GENAVIR, but may also be extended to users of scientific departments (geosciences, halieutics, physics and environment), to industry partners or national and international research partners.

The department is responsible for the standardisation and qualification of acoustic and seismic systems, both in dock and at sea. For this, it maintains and implements specific measurement equipment, based on an acoustic tank and trial pool, which enables it to fulfil the requirements of Ifremer projects or any external requests.
