The Department of Research Vessels and Embarked Equipment consists of three services: Vessels and Equipment, Engineering of On-board Software, and Acoustic and Seismic.

It brings together, maintains and develops the skills needed to:
- Oversee the construction and modernisation of oceanographic research vessels and embarked equipment
- Ensure the evolution of vessels and renewal of embarked equipment
- Conduct technical research for the conception of innovative acoustic and seismic equipment
- Conceive complex scientific equipment and perform the corresponding technical follow-up, quality control and data analysis
- Oversee the development of on-board software on vessels and submarines for the scientific community
- Transfer equipment, tools and methods to their users
- Perform technological scouting in the field of research vessels and their equipment
