Department of Lagoons, Ecosystems and Sustainable Aquaculture in New Caledonia

Coasts of French Overseas Regions

The Department of Lagoons, Ecosystems and Sustainable Aquaculture in New Caledonia is divided between three sites (Nouméa, Koné and Saint Vincent). Its missions are to perform research actions defined in the project ‘Deduction’ (Sustainable Development of Shrimp farming, Information treatment and System Observation in New Caledonia) and to start work, organised and led by the department, on the lagoons of New Caledonia, one of the three multidisciplinary subjects chosen in Ifremer’s Four-Year Contract. The activities of Ifremer concern the issues of natural resource exploitation, integrated management of the environment, resources and uses of the coast, and the promotion of tools for operational coastal oceanography.

Its fields of specialist skill and knowledge are shrimp aquaculture, the coastal environment and its biodiversity.
