Three coastal départements compose the geographical territory for this laboratory: the Cotes d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and Finistère (coast between the Couesnon and Laita esturaries). The laboratory has sites in Paimpol, where a member of staff monitors the area between Finistere and west of the bay of Saint-Brieuc (former maritime district of Paimpol), and Brest, where three staff monitor northern Finistère.
With approximately 1600 km of coastline of high geomorphological diversity, this stretch of coast is ideal for marine aquaculture and exploitation of natural shellfish beds. It is also an important hydrodynamic transition zone between the Atlantic and the English Channel, and is thus a favourable study area where lusitanian and boreal species coexist in both benthic and pelagic domains.
