In July 2003, The Ifremer library of Brest moved into its new premises of La Perouse library. During this operation, a lot of old vertical aerial photos, forgotten for thirty years, reappeared from the past.
After a quick inventory, it comes out these photos cover most of the French seashore and were taken between 1919 and 1953. It comes up on photos albums, 150 of them, each holding between 20 and 100 photos. A location map is present in each album, it gives information about the position of each photos.
Each album is about a defined geographical zone. For instance, the surroundings of Morlaix, from Cerbère to La nouvelle, the surroundings of Toulon, mouth of the Somme, for given year. This collection was built during different aerials campaigns, at different times. Some areas, surely, in the past, for strategics reasons, has been abundantly and regurlaly photographed. This is the case for the North of France, Toulon, Brest…
These photos show an invaluable historical and heritage. Transformed into georeferenced objects, this data will be directly used in geographical information systems. All of the coastal zone evolution could be appreciated by the accuracy obtained overlapping with more recent data. Thus the more scientific aspects of the pictures exploitation could mainly be treated with studies on the morphological evolution of the coast, and also changes in land use in coastal area.
