PhD topic

The functional exploration of the genes differentially expressed between the Crassostrea gigas oysters’ strain : Resistance and Sensitivity to the summer mortality.
This subject went along the set up of the “microarray” technic ( DNA chip) on Pacific oyster. Thos works allowed to generate a important number of sequences for oyster, which will be available on a data base. The comparison of the summer mortality resistant and sensitive oysters - shortly before a mortality phenomenon observed on site - enables to identify the candidates, interesting to study on a functional point of view, in order to understand their implication in mortality phenomenon. More precisely, we achieved a detailed study of a gene involved in the reproduction, via molecular biology ways.
Her college scholarship
Biology preparatory class in the Marcellin Berthelot High School of Saint Maur (94), followed by a engineering school INSA in Lyon, elective course : Bioinformatics and Modelisation.
After an engineering internship at the Ifremer Oceanological Centre of the Pacific in Tahiti on pearl oysters, she rose a consciousness of her fondness with research (strongly increased by her supervisor Nathalie Cochennec…). The wholly process to obtain a PhD at Ifremer then followed, to join the family and offer the knowledge gathered during the Bioinformatics’ engineer course.

Why did she sign up for science

"Scientific research is full of evolution and constant wondering. Achieving a PhD at Ifremer allows me to use state-of-the-art technologies, thus enabling a contribution to the understanding of a “social” phenomenon : the summer mortalities. What remains very attractive to me in this field is the shared passion between a whole team, working together on a long term project. Personal contributions were essential for the realization of this project.
International awards
"Thurlow C. Nelson Award", best oral communication, on march 2007, at NSA conference in San Antonio (Texas).

Publications

- 1 Publication in "Gene" magazine
- 2 publications submitted to BMC Genomics et Genomics magazines
- 2 international posters (China and France)
- Contribution at 2 international conferences (oral presentations USA, France) and to the European program Aquafirst assembly (oral presentation, Italy)
