Laboratory of Geochemistry and Metallogeny (LGM)
______________________________
Assignment
The laboratory is situated at the turning point between basic and applied research, researching energy mineral resources of the sea. It specifically researches the tracers in hydrothermal plumes, hot and cold fluids and gases, methane hydrates, geochemistry of basalts and oceanic metallogeny. It actions are largely supported by at sea equipment and laboratory analyses.
- Ocean-substratum exchanges and transfers.
- Deep sea mineral and energy resources.
Development and implementation of specific at sea and laboratory tools
- Physical and chemical tracers in the walter column (vertical (rosette bathy sensor) and horizontal profiles (submersibles, titanium syringes, mini-rosette, nephelometers, temperature probes),
- Samplings and analysis of fluids and gas (1 container, chromatography, fluorimetry, colorimetry),
- In situ analyser: Mn, Fe, H2S,
- Analyses of rocks and sediments on board,
- Fluid, gas, rock and sediment analysis, in laboratory (XRF, XRD, chromatography, microsounder, mass spectrometry, ICP-MS).

INSTRUMENTATION
ICP-MS (see site Neptune)
The project "ICP-MS Ocean", concerns a groundbreaking piece of equipment for fine analysis of chemical elements and isotopes in natural samples of geological and biological origin.
This cutting edgy technology will be a structuring element of Europole Mer (EM) of which the aim is t affirm research in the "Finistère" within a marine oriented "regional pole of excellence". This equipment comes to complete the existing panoply (mass spectrometer, electronic microsounder). The project associates several research laboratories of Université Brestagne Ouest, Ifremer, and IRD oriented towards marine research in biology, microbiology and geochemistry.
It will place these laboratories on the level of the largest European and world laboratories in oceanographic research, all equipped with these techniques. One of the expected consequences is to give a strong impulse to the attractivity of the scientific communities of the French West working in the field of oceanography.
One of the stong points of the techniques of the ICP-MS is the great diversity of subjects able to be approached. The expressed scientific needs result in proposing an installation comprising three components. A component for the ultimate analyses of trace elements, a component for isotopic analyses and a laser component for specific analyses (elementary or isotopic) on solid materials of bioloical or geological origin. The isotopic aspect is the one presenting the strongest potential of innovation and originality.
One of the originalities of the project is the multidisciplinarity of the teams involved. The multifield approach of the scientific questions posed by biology and geoscience is a strong tendency of the beginning of this century. The multidisciplinarity of oceanographical research also results in identifying varied research orientations concerning applied research (fisheries, energy and mineral resources, environment) and basic research.
