L’objectif principale de PROMESS 1 était de permettre à une communauté scientifique interdisciplinaire basée en Europe d’avoir accès à un bateau foreur de l’industrie, pour pouvoir échantillonner et faire des mesures in situ sur des séquences sédimentaires déposées pendant les derniers 500.000 ans et longues jusqu’à 300 m sur le plateau et la pente continentale du Golfe du Lion et de la mer Adriatique. Le vidéo «Une promesse de 500.000 ans », réalisé à l’Ifremer, présente la zone d’étude du Golfe du Lion.
